Jordy Kerwick

Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1982. Lived in Hong Kong briefly during childhood. Currently lives and works in Albi, France.

Jordy Kerwick is a self-taught artist who began his painting career in 2016, as encouraged by his wife, a trained artist. He cited French Fauvist painter Henri Matisse as a major influence of his work. Kerwick has quickly acquired global recognition for his bold, raw and unapologetic approach to palette and pattern, executing vivid, expressionistic and highly-stylised compositions.

Known for his colourful, eclectic still-life paintings from earlier, Kerwick's latest body of work explores the fantastical elements and storied visions of the artist's interior imagination where new and unknown terrains collide. Bright colours aside his polycephalic, monster-like creatures hint at contemporary fears: consequences of genetic engineering or fallout from nuclear conflict. Using a variety of materials, from oil, acrylic and spray paint on canvas, to oil stick and collage on paper, the artist's "the more mistakes, the merrier" approach rejoices by unexpected combinations of colour, texture, and form.

Kerwick's striking visual language stems largely from his homebody, domestic lifestyle—his son’s freehand doodle inspired him in the first place. His work draws on the contours of organic forms in domestic settings. Texture and colour inhabit his canvas, often centred on a potted plant. Sometimes traces of human life present themselves in way of an abandoned cigarette or a pile of books, their titles written playfully on their spines almost as if conversing with the viewer. The artist utilises a decisive use of impasto paint in blocks of colour combined with anarchic references to mythical figures, punk, and the odd romantic poet or philosopher. Kerwick’s paintings go beyond simply beautiful subject matter to reveal deeply personal stories like an inside joke.
