Nicasio Fernandez
Born in 1993 in Yonkers, NY, USA. Lives and works in upstate New York.
Fernandez obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2015. He is widely recognized for his distinctive figures characterized by warm skin tones and exaggerated bodily proportions and facial features. The frenetic energy in his paintings evokes the work of the Chicago Imagists, who used bold lines and vivid colors to distort human forms, expressing surrealism with a figurative or even realistic style. Fernandez’s characters embody a rich spectrum of emotional tension and absurdity. Despite the seemingly deformed shapes and unconventional colors of these figures, his precise selection of hues and meticulous gradation techniques draw viewers into his world.
Fernandez's artistic practice juxtaposes elements of surrealist fantasy with the banal aspects of everyday life, infusing vibrancy into experiences that are often perceived as monotonous or grey. His style bears some kind of resemblance to that of Philip Guston, while the interplay of light and shadow in his pieces recalls the dramatic chiaroscuro typical of Baroque art. However, Fernandez's work transcends a mere inheritance from the "Old Masters." He draws inspiration from a diverse array of sources beyond the traditional boundaries of high art. Influences from street fashion, skateboarding culture, comic book aesthetics, and slapstick comedy intermingle with stylistic references to artists such as Otto Dix, Peter Saul, Judith Linhares, and the Chicago Imagists.
In his paintings, Fernandez ingeniously channels a sense of entertaining humor reminiscent of pop culture while simultaneously addressing the complex relationship that contemporary society maintains with the concept of work. Engaging with his artwork may evoke feelings of anxiety, fear, disgust, inferiority, and oppression—all emotions that resonate with the human experience. Through this intricate interplay of themes and influences, Fernandez crafts a unique narrative that invites viewers to confront the multifaceted nature of existence in the modern world.
