Ryan McGinness
Born 1972 in Virginia Beach, VA, currently living and working in Manhattan, New York.
McGinness received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University in 1994. While completing his degree, McGinness served as a curatorial assistant at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA.
Unified by a psychedelic, graphic aesthetic, McGinness’ work derives inspiration from skateboard culture and surf decals to explore how contemporary iconography can communicate personal meaning. “Nothing inherently has meaning,” he once said. “Meaning is projected and reflected which gives the illusion that things ‘have’ meaning. In that sense, meaning is like color.” Often featuring commercial logos, signs, and kaleidoscopic patterns, his work is characterized by its uniform smoothness and mechanical application of color.
His work is shown globally and is housed in the permanent public collections of the The Metropolitan Museum of Art(New York) Museum of Modern Art(New York, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond), Museum of Contemporary Art (San Diego), and the UBS Collection among others.
