Hidetaka Suzuki

Born in 1968, Hokkaido, Japan. Currently lives and based in Tokyo.

Throughout his career, Suzuki has persistently engaged with the theme between "Reality” and “Fiction," investigating the possibility of painting as a medium of expression. Echoing the sentiment of American author Mark Twain, who famously stated, "Truth is stranger than fiction," Suzuki's creation can always be interpreted through both perspective of reality and fiction. The motifs he presents, often detached from their original contexts,  invite viewers into a fantastical yet empty world that exists in the space between the two realms. Moreover, Suzuki's distinctive distortions and brushwork effectively transform reality into fiction and vice versa.

The artist is deeply influenced by the use of media such as the internet and generative artificial intelligence, leading him to contemplate the conflicts and uncertainties experienced by individuals within these contexts. Suzuki’s past experience of moving from Hokkaido to Tokyo for education, along with the immediate information obtained through decentralized networks, prompted him to reflect on the concepts of "reality" and "fiction." He noted, "When I was in Hokkaido, messages from the capital felt fictional to me; however, my experiences on the internet felt real because the responses were so immediate." Suzuki's creations are inspired by digital imagery, using painting to reconstruct and manipulate the boundaries between reality and the virtual, allowing viewers in front of the artwork to become immersed in the oscillation brought about by their own memories and emotions.
